James Thomas Wentzel of Lebanon passed away at Celebration Villa of Lebanon, on February 20th, at the age of 80. He was born on October 24, 1943, to Richard L. Wentzel and Regina C. Wentzel (nee Scanlin), also of Lebanon.
James graduated from Lebanon Catholic High School as part of the Class of 1962, and enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam conflict. He was honorably discharged after serving five years aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. F. D. Roosevelt.
His civilian career started at Hempt Brothers Construction, and continued at Cleaver Brooks, Hershey Entertainment Company, and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. After retiring, he volunteered at the Navy Club of Lebanon, and renewed his love of travel, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, Ireland, Australia, and other places.
His marriage to Sandra L. Bentz began on September of 1968, and produced a daughter before their divorce in the early 1990's.
He also shared his life with a series of feline companions. His favorite was named Precious.
In addition to his daughter Jennifer McCurdy, he is survived by his son-in-law Eric, grandson Sean, brothers Richard W. Wentzel, Edward J. Wentzel, sister Jean Marie O'Sullivan, and many nieces and nephews.
One of the activities he enjoyed later in life was watching his grandson perform in local theatre productions, most recently with The St. James Players.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Patricia A. Cantwell.
A viewing will be held from 10:00-11:00 AM on Thursday February 29th at St. Mary's Church, 2 N 8th St, Lebanon, PA 17046, Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00AM. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 13, 2024 at Holy Cross Cemetery.
