Lebanon County lost a good one when Frederick A. Maurer, 84, passed away peacefully and with family by his side on January 5 at the Hershey Medical Center.  He was the devoted husband of Geri (Selman) Maurer.

Born in Lebanon on April 25, 1937, he was a son of the late Adam and Pauline (Bender) Maurer. He graduated from Lebanon Catholic High School in 1956, after which he proudly served in the Air Force for 4 years.

When he returned to Lebanon, he worked at the Lebanon Steel Foundry until it closed, and then retired from the City of Lebanon as a plant operator. In retirement, he enjoyed driving exotic cars and working in the dealer relations department at the Manheim Auto Auction.

A bit of a rabblerouser in his younger years, he and his friends had many adventures he often recounted until he met and pursued the love of his life, Geri, and subsequently "settled down." They hosted countless family gatherings where Fred could often be found next to the BBQ pit. Beloved by many, Fred is remembered best for being an all-around great guy, lover of gadgets, hats and history, and a faithful member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. He loved to travel and organized many trips for friends and parishioners.

Fred was dedicated, thoughtful and loved to create. He designed games for the church festival, fundraising flyers, decorations for the house, and never missed a holiday-themed mailbox wrap. If you were lucky, you received a homemade (often hilarious) card for your birthday or anniversary.

He will be dearly missed by his wife and 3 children: Michael Herzog (wife Tillie), Missy Kunder (husband John), Nicole Gray (husband Scott).  Six grandchildren; Amanda, Jennifer, Ashley, Justin, Freddie, Piper, 8 great grandchildren, 1 brother; Thomas Maurer, 1 sister; Kathryn Reist, several nieces & nephews and best friend Buck Shounder.

He was preceded in death by a great granddaughter (Ellis) and 2 sisters (Mary Wike and Elizabeth Longenecker).

Funeral Mass on Thursday at 11:00 am at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church (120 E Lehman St, Lebanon, PA 17046).  A viewing will be held prior to mass from 10-11.  The family respectfully requests that everyone wear a mask to protect vulnerable attendees.  Interment St. Gertrude's Cemetery.  Friends and family not able to attend can view the service remotely (details below). A celebration of life will be held in the Spring to honor Fred.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Holy Name Society of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, an organization Fred served in dutifully for decades.
