Obituary

Catherine M. ("Cass") Coyle, 95, of Lebanon, passed away on Dec. 27, 2022 in Hershey. Born in Lebanon on November 24, 1927, she was the daughter of Leo and Catherine (Perlaki) Scanlin, and the widow of John W. ("Jake") Coyle, who died on Apr. 14, 1999.

In November, 1969, running as a Democrat, she became the first female District Justice ever elected in Lebanon County. An election night vote counting error in the city's 5th Ward showed her losing to her Republican opponent, but the official count three days later and a recount declared her the winner by seven votes. A framed "7" hung behind her office desk throughout her career.

She was re-elected three times, and served the City's 5th, 8th, and 9th Wards until her retirement in 1990.

Catherine was a 1945 graduate of Lebanon Catholic High School and held a bachelor's degree from Penn State.

She is survived by five children, Anne Redcay, Stevens; Christopher, Lebanon; Edward, Mt. Gretna; Philip, Lebanon, and Vincent, Prospect; a sister, Margaret Almaraz, Querétaro, Mexico; eleven grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects on Friday morning, December 30, between 10:00 and 11:00 at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, 120 East Lehman Street, Lebanon.
