Barbara Ann (Longenecker) Root, 84, of New Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024. She was the wife of the late Franklin D. Root, Sr. Born in Lebanon on October 5, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Elam H. and Mariam E. (Arnold) Longenecker.
Barbara was a 1958 graduate of Lebanon Catholic High School. She was a retired dietary aide from the Lebanon VA Hospital and was a member of NARFE. In her early years, she also worked at the Berkshire Hosiery Mill. She was a member of the St. Katharine Drexel Parish Mechanicsburg, and a longtime member of St. Cecilia and St. Gregory Parishes in Lebanon. Barbara loved her family. Every birthday was celebrated with grandma's famous cake. She enjoyed going to musical and sporting events in which "her boys" participated. She loved to play games, especially pinochle and Yahtzee. She was a kind and sweet lady who loved people unconditionally.
She is survived by her son Deacon Scott, husband of Shannon, and grandsons Scott Andrew, Jr., Robert, Stephen, Zachary, Joseph, and Kolbe who were her pride and joy. She is also survived by three sisters, Margaret, wife of Bob Fidler, Eleanor, wife of Kurt Hoke, and Cecelia Smith. Barbara is also survived by stepchildren Leaetta, Audrey, Frank, Susan, and Wanda and several step grandchildren step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert, Elam "Butch", and Herman Longenecker, and her sister Mary (Longenecker) Weiant.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara's name may be made to the tuition assistance program at Trinity High School in Camp Hill, PA or Our Lady of the Cross School in Lebanon, PA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 5, 2024 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 2596 Cornwall Road, Cornwall, PA 17016. Interment will follow at Millbach Cemetery in Newmanstown. A viewing will be held prior to Mass from 9:30-11:00 AM at the church. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. has been entrusted with arrangements.
