Dean Donald Deibler
Chief Warrant Officer, Dean Donald Deibler, USMC (retired), 85, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 while in Hospice Care at his daughter's home. He was the husband of Agnes C. (Massar) Deibler, who passed away on January 28, 2002 after 52 years of marriage.
Dean was born in Tower City, Schuylkill County on January 14, 1925. He was the son of the late Charles F. and Eva A. (Reinoehl) Deibler.
Dean attended Palmyra High School and prior to graduation enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 18, 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a Flight Engineer, participating in the Iwo Jima Operation; Okinawa Operation; Mariana Islands; Leyte Operation; Luzon Operation; Consolidation of Solomon Islands; Western Caroline Islands Operation, where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross with Three Gold Stars and Fourteen Air Medals for Extraordinary Achievements and Meritorious Acts while participating in 95 aerial flights in active combat areas. His courage and devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Marine Corps. After his discharge from active duty in 1950, he spent 2 years in the U.S. Army and four years in the U.S. Air Force Reserve where he continued his work in aviation maintenance. In 1960, he returned to the Marine Corps as an active reserve, and spent three years in a Marine Corps Infantry company obtaining the rank of Gunnery Sgt. Dean finished his military career of 39 years in the Marine Corps Aviation Reserve Unit at Willow Grove Station as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, attaining the rank of CWO-4.
Dean's civilian aviation career began in 1956 working for Capital Air Lines, Reading Aviation Service, Perkiomen Airways and CAP Aviation in Reading, serving as a Master Aircraft Mechanic and Special Projects Technician for modification, design, development, and fabrication of aircraft parts and systems, until retiring in 1988. He received a Commendation from the Queen of Holland in 1953 assisting with the Holland flood relief and recovery efforts. Dean had once flown co-pilot with Charles A. Lindburg, and had also developed numerous patents in use with the aviation industry. He had also self-contracted three homes in his lifetime.
He was a member of St. Cecilia Church, Lebanon. He was an avid hunter, raced homing pigeons, and enjoyed many carpentry projects with his family.
He is survived by five children, Terrence C. Deibler of Forksville, Dean T., husband of Neena Deibler of Boothwyn, Ann Marie, wife of Edward Smith of Lebanon, Steven A., husband of Lori Deibler of Lebanon & Richard K. Deibler of Pine Grove; eight Grandchildren, Joe, Jeremy, Josh, Greg, Dan, Lauren, Melissa & Angela; and two great grandchildren, Morgan & Eriq
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Frederick P. who passed shortly after his birth on Dec. 23, 1963.
Funeral Mass Monday 10:00 AM from St. Cecilia Church, 202 E. Lehman St., Lebanon, 17046. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery with Full Military Honors presented by the Marine Corps Honor Guard. Viewing hours Sunday from 6-8 PM with Recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 PM, at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon, and Monday morning from 9:00-10:00 at the church.
